SUMNERS SALEABLES

SUMNER’S SALEABLES includes items (ART and DVD) I’ve developed and at the urging of viewers of this web-site are now available for sale.  Even if you aren’t interested in making a purchase, have some fun and look through the ART gallery and be sure to view the on-line Video which is the lead-in of the DVD.

“SUMART”  The paintings are ‘original art’ I’ve created on my computer.  What is required is a powerful computer, a number of graphics/painting software programs, a pressure sensitive stylus, and a background as an artist.  I originally painted using Water Colors and sold many paintings personally and through a number of gallery shows.  Using my computer background, I moved into Computer Art a number of years ago and now use that medium almost exclusively.  Some of my computer paintings are on display in the permanent art collection of the Boynton Beach Jewish Community Center.

Following the same painting sequence used in my water color paintings, I develop a pallet of colors and then, using a drawing stylus/drawing slate (which operates the same as a computer mouse on a pad) I draw and paint the images.  The screen cursor (pointer) takes on all the attributes of the selected painting tool... i.e.  a drawing pencil, a water color paint brush, etc.  The progress of the work appears on the computer monitor, which acts as my painting canvas.  Once created, I print the painting on high quality acid-free watercolor paper using a large format professional ink jet printer.

“SUMNER’S BIRDS and MORE” VIDEO  ‘Sumner’s Birds and More’ is a project which spanned nearly a decade.  The effort was broken down into three parts... the bird photography, the identification of the 131 different birds, and the creation of the video.  It is interesting to note that genetically, birds have many of the characteristics of humans... some species are shy while others  are aggressive, some are family oriented while others are loners; and most change their ‘coats’ depending on the season and the males become very colorful when looking for a mate.

After the photo shoots came the sorting of the thousands of digital photographs to glean the best shots.  Then the birds were identified using a number of reference sources (books and the Internet). Once that was completed, 28 individual slide shows were produced using Pro Show Gold.  Each show covers an individual species.  Music was added to each show to add to the viewer’s interest.  Finally, an Internet search for ‘bird voices’ was conducted and, when found, their ‘songs’ were added to the photos.

The CD labeled ‘DVD’ contains the bird video.  While you could view it at a single setting (over an hour), it is really geared for the birder who is interested in a single species... that’s why the overall video is broken up into the 28 menu items (each covering an individual species or topic).  To view the DVD in your computer or home TV, place the DVD into the DVD player and click on the appropriate menu item.  The CD labeled ‘Resource CD’ contains two index files... one has the birds sorted by species while the other is an alphabetical listing of the contents of the DVD.  The files are in pdf format and can be viewed on any computer using the Adobe Reader program.  If you don’t have that program, simply download the free version at www.adobe.com.

There are some special highlights you might want to look at.  For example, in the ‘Wading Birds’ section, you can view a chronological sequence of a Great Blue Heron building her nest, feeding the babies with food brought in from the male, the growth of the babies, etc.  You may also want to visit the ‘Sharing the Habitat’ section.  Standing on a bridge at the Wakodahatchee Wildlife Preserve I was able to capture the entire mating ritual of two Alligators. Also in that section, while at the Loxahatchee Federal Preserve I caught the cannibalistic activities of giant grasshoppers.  Finally, the first menu item contains a tribute to the victims of 9-11.

You’ll notice a menu item labeled ‘unidentified’.  These are unidentified birds or birds whose species I couldn’t identify.  Should you be able to help here, please let me know at compsum@yahoo.com.  Thanks...

The price of the ‘package’ (DVD and Index CD) is just $10.00 plus $4.00 shipping and handling Click HERE to view the DVD introduction
